Fight Breast Cancer: Put on Your T-Shirt
Self-Exam Kits Can Help Women Keep Track Of Findings
A new T-shirt could help women fight breast cancer.
The Atlanta-based Mark for Life offers a shirt replete with diagrams to guide a woman's hand motions through a breast self-exam.
A breast self-exam is one of three tests the American Cancer Society recommends to help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. The organization also recommends regular clinical breast exams for women starting in their 20s and annual mammograms for women 40 and older.
Breast cancer has a 96 percent survival rate when discovered early. Lumps, bumps and knots in the breast are normal, but a doctor should be alerted to any changes, experts say.
The shirt comes with a pen for women to mark right on the shirt the location of any lumps. That way, women can compare their self-exams each month. It also comes with detailed instructions and calendar stickers so women can remember to do a self-exam each month.
The T-shirt is a stretchy cotton-spandex blend and is sold according to bra size. The kit sells for about $30 on the Mark for Life Web site, or by calling (877) 512-LIFE.
